This rustic retreat in Running Springs is an ongoing project. The clients wanted to bring their love for the outdoors inside. By sticking to a warm color palette of earth colors and highlighting all of the beautiful wood already there, we selected natural materials and made a few updates for a big improvement. The clients chose to start with the kitchen because the wife loves cooking and entertaining, and after all, the kitchen is the heart of the home.

First step was to decide what improvements were necessary and what labor they could do on their own to save money and stick within their budget. They updated a few appliances on their own and chose to keep the existing layout. They also contributed by staining the cabinets to match the wood beams running atop the kitchen ceiling. The next step was to select granite for the counter tops. Not only is granite aesthetically pleasing, it’s a tough surface that stands up well to scratches, heat, and stains, which is something the client not only required, but appreciated.

I love when client’s are willing to take a leap of faith. When looking for sinks, I thought that installing a copper farmhouse apron sink would be the crown jewel of this space. It’s a beautiful, natural, and environmentally friendly material. Also, apron sinks are super ergonomic and there’s no lip for food and other stuff to get stuck. You don’t see them very much because copper works with very few styles. Well, these clients took that leap of faith and they installed the copper sink and they LOVE it! The sink pulls out the colors from the granite counter tops and makes them shine even more.

Next step, lighting, paint and accessories.

This will be terrific when the faucets and soap dispenser are in place. I’m sure that a rustic towel holder and lotion and soap dispensers will look great too. Just curious what is above the sink?
